Save the Dam. Save the Pond.

Gorrie Dam and Pond

This page can be used to document why our dam should be repaired and why the pond is so important to the community. A few days after the meeting on Oct 23/2017 I came up with an idea for a marketing campaign. The idea is based on a catch phrase used for a popular TV series called Heroes.

"Save the Cheerleader. Save the World."

This is a simple phrase yet powerful phrase. Talk to anyone who was a fan of Heroes and they can probably repeat that phrase. it conveys the message that things are connected and doing one thing will lead to much more important things. Much like our Dam and Pond. Without the Dam there is no pond. Without the Pond there is less habitat for wildlife. Without the Pond there is a lot of empty land in which noxious weeds can grow. The pond provides a beautiful view for visitors. The docks from those properties which back out onto the onto the pond give it a cottage like feel. The pond is a source of recreation. The pond makes the Gorrie Park a more desirable place to visit. This means more visitors.

To simply say Save our Pond is not enough because there is so much more connected to the issue. It does not convey any info as to why the pond should be saved. It doesn't generate any real interest. I've seen the signs in Wingham and my thinking is those that live next to the pond want their water back so they put up the signs around town. There isn't enough in the words to make me think about bigger issues.

In this example the message of saving the pond connects with the message of saving the wildlife. This is something that was discussed in the meeting and is a message that should be shared with all.

Here is another example of what can be said. Without the pond there is an enormous amount of fertile soil which weeds will gladly grow in. This includes noxious weeds such as Ragweed which is a curse to those allergic to it. It is my understanding that Howick has a noxious weed bylaw and the number of weeds that will grow on the exposed pond bottom will far exceed anything that will grow in town. If the pond is not restored then the Maitland River Conservation Authority will need to clean up the weeds.

In this example I also included the name of the town. This would be useful for people from outside of our community.
